Think local, buy local
When it comes to shopping, there’s no better way to buy than locally. Whether it’s stocking up on farm fresh produce from your neighbourhood greengrocer, or visiting your local shopping centre for a fix of the latest fashions, buying locally is easier than you think.
We challenge you to buy local for one month. Think of the benefits it will deliver to your local area:
- Helping employment
- Reduced carbon footprint
- A boost to the local economy
- Enhanced community spirit
All it takes is a slight re-think when you’re about to make purchase decisions – and the conscious choice to support your local traders.
So how local is local?
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd tells us that to “buy local” is to buy Australian. That’s a start. But we think it can be taken further – at least for a one-month challenge!
To put a figure on it, let’s say 25 kilometres. Unless you live on a farm, you’re bound to have some local shops nearby. If a major department store doesn’t fall within that radius, it might mean foregoing some big-ticket purchases this month – but think of the money you’ll save!
Instead, focus on all the fresh, fabulous, local produce and products you will be able to buy instead. You’ll be doing your bit for the local community.
